With 3,4 billion users worldwide in 2016 the internet is one of the strongest mediums. Consequently digital advertising is ubiquitous. The user is confronted with all different types of ads at any time. But this does not meet the approval of everyone and therefore ad blockers are enjoying great popularity and usage rises. Advertisement is an essential component of our daily life and has always been present. When it started is hard to say. In the Middle Ages the first market criers praised their goods. Within the 19th century the advertising industry grew and began to use posters to promote products in a more emotional way. Those who watched the American period drama television series “Mad Men” know that advertising became an even bigger business with the boom in foundations of advertising agencies in the 1950s. This shows that advertisement has a long history and it belongs to our daily life since decades and centuries.

Publishers are financed by advertisement. It represents a huge part of the source of income of them. If everyone would install ad blockers then this source of income would cease. Consequently the publishers would no longer provide their content for free. The German publisher Bild.de is getting consistent here and doesn’t provide any content for users with installed ad blocker. Other publishers are less drastic and just inform their readers. In consequence website visitors would have to pay for reading articles.

Not all ads are inappropriate. Companies are working constantly on their algorithms to only provide advertisments that fit user’s interests and behaviour.  The keyword is “relevance”. The content of recommendation ads for example is based on the users’ actual reading and clicking behavior. Consequently the user is confronted with advertisement that is individually based on his interests. In this case the user could benefits from these recommendation ads.

In this case the creativity of the advertiser is required. There are all different types of ads but it is important that the ad is catchy and interesting. No one will be annoyed with an ad that is funny, charming and informative at the same time. Super Bowl is the best example. Almost 112 Millions viewers watched the big game last year on TV. A lot of them is watching Super Bowl because of the special ads that are shown. These ads stand out because of their high creativity. Afterwards these ads got shared and go viral if they were outstanding and kept in mind.

#5 Digital Advertising can expand horizons 

Last but not least ads are a perfect way to get to know new things. They inform about the latest trends, new products and services. The user gets the opportunity to think outside the box and can increase his knowledge.

As you can see ads play an important role in our everyday life. Most people tend to be annoyed and upset with ads but yet it would make a huge difference if they disappeared because we’ve gotten so used to the advantages of them.
